WP Engine alternative

A WP Engine alternative when the agency bill is the problem

WP Engine is a separate company. WPHost is not affiliated with it. Agencies usually leave when each extra client site or visit tier becomes another line on the bill. This host is the agency account instead: every client site in one dashboard, one bill, and a login for the client that is not yours.

What you are comparing

WP Engine sells managed WordPress with its own cache and edge stack, and it prices plans around sites and visits. WPHost does not copy that stack. The comparison that matters for a portfolio is how the account is sold.

Business is $149 a month, or $1,490 once a year ($124.17 a month, two months free). Starter is $9, Pro is $30, and Scale is $65. Cancel any time.

What an agency account includes

  • Each WordPress site has its own MySQL database, its own files, and its own web server site.
  • PHP 8.4, automatic HTTPS on the preview address, and a custom domain when DNS points here.
  • One dashboard and one bill. Client access is an invite with the editor or viewer role, not the agency password. Billing stays on the agency account.
  • Pro and above include staging copies, CLI deploy, and scheduled tasks. Pro and Scale include up to 10 team members.
  • Scale and Business check uptime every five minutes and email the owner only when a site changes between up and down.
  • Business is unlimited WordPress sites, unlimited team members and client logins, and a free migration of each eligible client site.
  • A recovery point stores that site’s files and database together, and it can be restored. You take it when you want one. It is not a daily backup job.

What this is not

If the reason you pay WP Engine is their CDN, their page cache, or a plugin-update service, this is a different product. Say that before you move a site that depends on those.

  • There is no built-in CDN, page cache, or object cache.
  • There is no malware scanner, no automatic plugin updates, and no email hosting. Leave MX records where they are.
  • Support is a person answering the ticket. There is no coded response-time promise.
  • There is no SSH product and no multisite move. WooCommerce can run as PHP and MySQL. There is no dedicated checkout SLA.

A traffic spike on Business

Business has no enforced visit cap and no enforced bandwidth cap, so a spike does not suspend the site or add an overage. That site keeps its own address, files, and MySQL database. Uptime is checked every five minutes, and a person answers support. PHP for every site uses the same PHP 8.4 runtime.

Move the sites

Eligible client sites move for free on Business. Review each one on its preview URL before DNS changes.

Questions

Is WPHost part of WP Engine?

No. WPHost is independent hosting. The page uses the WP Engine name so agencies can find the comparison.

Do client sites share one WordPress login?

No. You invite the client as an editor or viewer. They get their own login. They do not get the agency password, and they do not see billing.

Will the site be faster because it left WP Engine?

No. We do not claim a speed multiple. PHP is 8.4. There is no built-in CDN or page cache. Test the theme and plugins on the preview URL.
